South Elgin High School Students - SEMA Project

Steve Schertz is the Automotive Instructor and NATEF Director at South Elgin High School and a Sycamore Motorsports member. His students are working on a very special project that is really cool. They plan on entering it in SEMA in a few years, which would be the only entry to date done entirely by high school students. I asked him about it and he was kind enough to send me the details and some pictures to post on our blog. Enjoy!

Adam,

The project is a 1937 Chevy 1/2 Pickup. My grandfather purchased it in 1951 for $275. My grandparents used it to move the family from Colorado to Central Illinois. It lived its life as a farm truck until it blew a head gasket in 1964. It was used to haul grain, feed, pigs to the market, and follow the combine to pick up corn that was left behind. It sat in a barn until 1984 until my grandparents sold the farm and retired. Then it was moved to a shed in Henry Illinois were it sat until I picked it up circa 2001. I stored it outside in a field for another 5 to 6 years until I relocated it to South Elgin High School where it sat some more.

My students started work on the truck in 2017. We used the original frame, cab, hoods, and doors – everything else was too far gone to be reused. Students did the body panel patches, metal straightening, fabricated the chassis, and all the other custom made parts. I spent many nights teaching students how to weld, cut, grind, and general fabrication skills. The pics show that we have put an immense amount of time into it and it should be ready for SEMA in 2-3 years. Students have been working on the truck each Thursday after school to learn no curricular skills or earn extra credit; they volunteer their time and are gaining experience they can take into a possible profession one day.

The specs of the truck are GM ls 6.0, cam, heads, intake, headers, Holley EFI and it should be about 500hp. 4 speed super T10, gm 10 bolt triangulated 4 link. Heidts front crossmember and suspension components. Willwood calipers and rotors all around. Corbeau seats, AutoMeter Race dash, Sparco steering wheel. Some of our sponsors are Painless Wiring, Schwartz Performance, Heidts, Flowmaster, B&M, I Did It, Sanderson Headers, AutoMeter, Pyrotect, and many others.

Cars and Coffee - May 2022

Well, we just squeezed in a good Cars and Coffee before the rain hit! Thanks to all who stopped by.

As always, you never know who and what is going to show up!

2022 Motoring Schedule!

Well, even though it’s April and I’m looking out of my window watching the snow come down, I’m starting to look forward to the 2022 motoring season! Maybe you are getting toys out of storage, seeing if that new battery minder worked over the winter, or getting ready to swap out the all-seasons to summer performance rubber on your daily driver. Whatever motoring mood you’re in this time of year, please make sure to check our events calendar page and start planning on joining us for some events!

Please let me know if there are events you want me to add to the schedule and/or if you are interested in coordinating an event.

Sycamore Motorsports is always open to hearing from you and let’s have a great 2022 behind the wheel!

Cars and Coffee - September 2021

One member brought a limited edition Morgan P101 to the event last Saturday. The 3 Wheeler — which was introduced in its current form in 2011 — will cease production in 2021, once type approval on its S&S V-twin engine finishes.

P101 stands for Project 101, the internal name given to the project to revive the 3 Wheeler when development began more than a decade ago. Limited to just 33 examples, the P101 was conceived by Morgan’s in-house Design and Engineering departments to celebrate their original project, and its resulting model success throughout its production run.

Another member brought a 1926 Ford Model T. This car was purchased by his father new and has been in the family ever since. While 15 million of these were made, it still is a rare sight to see one in this condition.

So, please do come out to the Cars and Coffee events! You never know what’s going to turn up!

Sycamore: Turning Back Time Car Show

Sycamore Motorsports was a major sponsor of the 21st annual Fizz Ehrler Memorial Turning Back Time Car Show this past Sunday (7/25/21). It was a great show with over 800 cars on display! Thank you for everyone who stopped by to chat with us.

A very special thank you to our member Paul Meier for bringing out his 1982 DeLorean. What better car to bring to a “Turning Back Time” car show?

Please keep an eye on the Events section of the website for upcoming things. Please continue to talk to your car friends about what we are trying to do here!

Car Sales and Searches

One of the founding functions of Sycamore Motorsports was to put the right sellers of cars in contact with the right buyers of cars. One of the best feelings as a car enthusiast when selling or purchasing a car is when you know it is going to, or coming from, a good home. Sycamore Motorsports’ website is equipped for handling consignment car listings of its member enthusiasts. So, if you are looking to purchase something in particular or if you need to sell a car in your stable, please let the group know.

If anything else, we can provide a good hosting of your car’s photographs.

Why You Need a Great Detailer

On February 27, 2019 I purchased a car that I wanted since I first saw one at the St. Louis European Auto Show on June 4, 2006. The car was, at the time, the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage. I loved the car ever since. I toured the Aston Martin factory in Gaydon, England in 2011 and I was completely hooked at that point.

So, moving forward to my delivery in March of 2019. The car came up from Houston, TX on an open trailer with three other sports cars to the Chicagoland area. Unfortunately, the truck encountered a pretty nasty ice storm in Missouri and the cars collected “some ice and salt”. I remember the day vividly, it was around 14 degrees outside, and it took a very long time to get it off the trailer and into the garage.

When I DID get it into the garage, I did not experience the thrill of new ownership that I had anticipated. Instead, I felt the feeling of total buyer’s remorse and dread…

Over the next few months I started work on all sorts of paint and window issues. The car had extensive iron contamination, scratches and swirl marks in the paint, extreme hard water etching on the glass, and many other cosmetic issues. I had my hands full to say the least.

Thankfully, I’ve been detailing cars for a while and also have a network of other detailers to call upon when I run into unique challenges. I still have some areas to work on and some new products to audition on her, but I’m very proud of the results so far.

So, always know a good detailer! And, yes, this blog posting is a shameless plug for my detailing business:

First Blog Post Musings...

39.jpeg

You might think this is a strange first post to this blog. Why is a make/model agnostic new motoring association posting a picture of 20 MINI Coopers all together? Well, let me explain…

I took this picture back in 2005 at Gateway International Raceway (now World Wide Technology Raceway) in St. Louis, Missouri. We lined up all the MINIs (and one classic Mini) on the finish line during a Phil Wicks Mini Cooper Driving Academy weekend. Phil Wicks was one of the stunt drivers in the movie The Italian Job (1969) and founded a driving academy for new MINI drivers in 2002. There’s Phil holding the checkered flag in front of the pack of MINIs that came out that weekend.

Looking at this photo brings back a lot of memories for me and all of the fun I’ve had with cars and spending time with people that share the same passion. It’s times like these that have inspired me to found Sycamore Motorsports. I don’t know where Sycamore Motorsports is going or what it will become in the upcoming years, but there is one thing I know for certain: We’re going to have a lot of fun on the journey together and I plan on having the time of my life getting there!
